Shiba Inu Deploys A New Security Layer

They look like names, but Shib Name Service acts like shields.

Shib Name is now live across the Shiba Inu ecosystem, marking the launch of its first native identity infrastructure—Shib Name Service (SNS). Integrated into Shib.io, the new system replaces long, error-prone wallet addresses with short, memorable .shib names for users who’ve claimed and linked theirs. It’s a small interface change with major security implications—and a deliberate move toward a more human-friendly, future-ready onchain identity.

Shib Name in Action: Display and Utility

For the average user, SNS operates on two levels:

Platform Display: If you own a .shib name, it now automatically replaces your address across Shib.io. No setup needed.

Wallet Utility: To send/receive crypto using your name (e.g., yourname.shib), a one-time wallet connection is required—typically via MetaMask and a simple browser extension or snap-in.

Once linked, your .shib name becomes a fully functional alias for your wallet address—usable anywhere it’s supported across the SHIB ecosystem.

Shiba Inu emphasized that the transition is designed to be gradual and inclusive. Those who have yet to claim a name can continue to interact across the Shiba Inu ecosystem using their traditional wallet addresses, ensuring the platform remains fully functional for all users.

As part of the ongoing rollout, the project is offering a temporary price reduction on new Shib Name registrations through the end of September to help accelerate adoption.

Scam-Proofing with Simplicity

The true power of Shib Name Service lies in how it lowers the risk of fraud and human error. Traditional wallet addresses—those endless strings of characters—are famously easy to mistype and hard to verify. Scammers exploit this. Shib Name flips that dynamic.

“Human-readable names instead of complex wallet addresses. A unified Shib identity across products. A smoother, more personal experience,” ShadowHunter, a pseudonymous engineering manager in the Shiba Inu ecosystem, told The Shib. “If you’ve claimed your Shib Name, you’re already set. If not—it’s time to secure your place in the ShibVerse.”

By making addresses easier to verify and remember, SHIB isn’t just simplifying crypto—it’s building security into the user experience itself.

Building the Groundwork for a Secure Identity

This security-focused rollout is the preparatory phase for a much larger ambition: a comprehensive digital identity system dubbed “Shib Identity.”

The Shib Name Service is intended to be the anchor for a user’s entire digital life within the ecosystem. An attestation service, which is currently being tested, according to ShadowHunter, will allow users to claim on-chain roles and build a verifiable reputation tied directly to that name. This means a user’s identity could eventually carry a full history of their contributions and credentials.

This rollout represents a quiet but significant choice: to build the future of digital identity not on complex, machine-first code, but on a human-centric foundation designed for security from the start. The question now is what kind of digital life its users will choose to build with these new tools.

Future updates will allow .shib names to anchor:

  • Reputation scores
  • Onchain roles
  • Verifiable credentials
  • Community-based attestations

Over time, each .shib name could become a living identity, carrying the history, trust, and social capital of its owner across dApps and decentralized services.

This change goes deeper than design. It marks a quiet shift from machine logic to something more human—where identity can be recognized, remembered, and trusted. With SNS, it’s no longer just about wallets but about the people behind them.

Your wallet says what you own. Your name says who you are.

As Shib Identity takes shape, one question remains:

Will you be just another address—or something more?

If you're among the lucky ones, it will arrive in your wallet soon. Otherwise, better luck in the next edition. Thank you for minting!
