Editor’s Note: This article has been updated to clarify that the community RPC at rpc.shibrpc.com is being shut down. The new, official Shibarium RPC endpoint is https://rpc.shibarium.shib.io.

The Shiba Inu development team is directing a significant infrastructure change for the Shibarium network by shutting down its legacy public Shibarium RPC endpoint, a move that requires immediate action from all users and developers to maintain their connection to the blockchain. This is not a routine update but a foundational shift designed to bolster the network’s long-term health and decentralization.

In Brief:

  • The legacy public Shibarium RPC is being shut down over a two-week period, and the old URL will no longer function after that time.
  • All users must manually update their wallet settings to the new endpoint: https://rpc.shibarium.shib.io to maintain network access.
  • This move is part of a strategic push to improve Shibarium’s decentralization, stability, and long-term resilience.

An RPC, or Remote Procedure Call, is the essential gateway that allows a user’s wallet or a decentralized application to communicate with the Shibarium network. It’s the channel for sending tokens, checking balances, or interacting with smart contracts. The retirement of the old URL means that without a manual update, applications will no longer be able to connect to the blockchain.

Why This Change is Necessary

This migration is the practical application of a long-term strategy to mitigate centralization risks. In an earlier article, Shibarium Engineering Manager John Doe explained that an over-reliance on a few public RPCs creates a potential single point of failure.

“This measure isn’t about restricting access but rather about encouraging a stronger, more decentralized network,” Doe previously stated. This technical shift is a deliberate step to ensure Shibarium’s infrastructure reflects the decentralized ethos of the Shiba Inu ecosystem.

Updating Your Shibarium RPC: A Step Toward Decentralization

For the vast majority of users, the required action is straightforward and should be completed within the two-week window. You must navigate to your wallet’s network settings (for example, in MetaMask or Coinbase Wallet) and replace the old, defunct URL with the new Shibarium RPC endpoint: https://rpc.shibarium.shib.io. Detailed, official instructions can be found in the updated Shiba Inu documentation.

For developers and high-volume users, this event serves as a practical reminder of the team’s core recommendation: the most secure and unrestricted method of interacting with Shibarium is by running a dedicated node. A personal node offers a private, direct line to the blockchain, bypassing public traffic and potential rate limits entirely. Each new node run by the community adds another pillar of support, making the entire network more robust and censorship-resistant.

The strength of a decentralized network is measured not just in its code, but in the collective actions of its community. This required update is one of those actions. By taking a few moments to switch to the new Shibarium RPC, you are making a direct and meaningful contribution to a more resilient and distributed Shibarium.

The Shiba Inu ecosystem continues its journey toward a fully decentralized network state with Shibarium at its core. As Shibarium’s adoption grows, ensuring the network’s resilience and decentralization becomes paramount. To that end, we will be implementing rate limiting on public Remote Procedure Call (RPC) endpoints.

Public RPCs have provided a convenient gateway for interacting with Shibarium, allowing users and developers to check balances, send transactions, and build decentralized applications (dApps). However, an over-reliance on a limited number of public RPC endpoints, even those provided by the community, can introduce centralization risks. In a truly decentralized network, access should be distributed and not dependent on a few.

New Shibarium RPC Limits Could Affect Users — Key Details Inside

To actively promote decentralization and the long-term health of Shibarium, rate limiting will be applied to public RPC endpoints. This means there will be a limit on the number of requests allowed within a specific timeframe. Specific details on these limits will be announced soon.

This measure isn’t about restricting access but rather about encouraging a stronger, more decentralized network. By implementing rate limits, we aim to motivate users and developers with consistent, high-volume needs to adopt more decentralized methods, primarily by running their own Shibarium nodes.

Running your own node offers significant advantages. It provides unrestricted access to the network, limited only by your node’s capacity. It increases resilience, ensuring uninterrupted access even if public RPCs face issues. Furthermore, it enhances privacy by routing your requests directly to the network. Most importantly, each community-run node strengthens Shibarium’s distributed infrastructure, making it more robust and censorship-resistant.

For many users with infrequent interactions, the upcoming rate limits may have minimal impact. However, for dApps, services, and individuals with high transaction volumes, transitioning to a dedicated node or exploring other decentralized infrastructure solutions is highly recommended to ensure seamless operation and contribute to Shibarium’s decentralization.

This step is a natural progression in aligning Shibarium’s access layer with the decentralized ethos of the entire Shiba Inu ecosystem. Stay tuned for further announcements regarding the specific rate limits and guides on setting up your own Shibarium node.

For developers looking for alternatives in the meantime, some third-party RPC providers like GetBlock and Nownodes also offer dedicated Shibarium access that may suit specific project needs—though we always encourage community-run infrastructure wherever possible.

Together, we are building a stronger, more decentralized future for Shibarium.
